The purpose of this session is to recognize the efffects a disaster will have on populations affected by the event. This one hour presentation will present the realities of behavioral health response on individuals and communities who’ve been exposed to a disaster or traumatic event. Target Audience: Anyone that works with individuals/communities impacted by trauma as a disaster responder, service provider or volunteer. Presenter: Gena Hodges, Iowa Department of Public Health, Bureau of Behavioral Health Objectives: *Partcipants will be able to identify critical disaster stressors, cognitive, emotional, behavioral and physical reactions to disasters. *Identify the do’s and don’t of administering Psychological First Aid to promote an environment of safety, calm and hope. *Instructor will identify the tools for managing ones own stress as a first responder, and care provider.
